Hello,
On May 11, 2022, City Council approved the Vacant Unit Tax (VUT). This tax is intended to encourage homeowners to maintain, occupy or rent their properties to increase the housing supply. Residential homeowners are required to declare the occupancy of their properties annually.
Over the past week residents have begun receiving a notice for the VUT that provides information such as the roll number and access code and identifies the next steps in the process to file the required occupancy status declaration for the 2022 calendar year. My office has received several comments and concerns in relation to the VUT notice and as such I have worked with City revenue staff to coordinate a virtual public information session on Wednesday December 7th from 7pm to 8pm. During the session staff will provide a presentation on the VUT followed by a question-and-answer period.
